Studying abroad opens up new doors for students personally and professionally. As an international student at Upper Iowa University (UIU), I become more open-minded and culturally aware by studying abroad. There are many benefits from studying abroad, but here are five benefits that I think are the most impactful.
Careers
In this globalizing world, many employers seek employees who have cross-cultural experiences. Therefore, studying abroad develops students’ perspectives on different cultures, as well as their language, education, and communication skills. The experience of studying abroad will strengthen students’ resumes and also their professional skillset.
Cross-cultural
Leaving home is always challenging at the beginning. However, there are a lot of fascinating lifestyles, people, and cultures all over the world to explore. An appreciation of different cuisines, customs, traditions, and social etiquettes improves one’s cultural competence when interacting with people from different backgrounds.
Language
Studying abroad is an opportunity to learn a new language or improve upon a language one is already studying in a fast and effective way. Also, it is always fun to practice and communicate with people in a different language.
Personal development
Living abroad is challenging. However, many people learn how to be independent and to solve various problems by themselves in diverse situations. Additionally, people develop skills and traits that are useful in day-to-day life, such as being versatile and patient.
Find New Interests
Studying in a different country offers opportunities to participate in many new activities, such as scuba diving, snow skiing, and other interests that one might not have discovered before. Thus, one may find undiscovered talents and new hobbies!
